a friends only journal, with random public entries thrown out from time to time. I don't post much, and I'm kind of boring when I do post; most of the actual contenty entries are private because they tend to be whiny as hell and I won't inflict that on everyone.

if for some demented reason you feel the need to friend me, well.... ignore the feeling.

it'll go away, I promise.

(however, if you like to read the results of endless quizzes, baby, you've just found a new best friend ^_^)

- and y'all know how much I don't like fish...

I have a vague recollection of reading something about this a couple of years ago, but I never followed up on it, mostly because I never really heard anything about it again... however, in light of the recent SOPA kerflufle, I think it's time to look into this more thoroughly...

ACTA in a Nutshell

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

More ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here:ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the text of the agreement (as finalized by participating countries on 15 April 2011) on the Government of Canada's website: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 |
  • Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

quoted from stumptuous.com

“I hate my body,” says a third. Who even cares who this one is, because it’s approximately 600 million of you. Well guess what, your body probably hates you back for years of loathing.

Actually, no, although you probably deserve your body’s hatred, it doesn’t. Because that’s the thing about your body. It loves you like the best mother bear in the world loves her Gerber baby cub — with a fierce, visceral, snarling love that will do anything to protect you. Boy, are you friggin lucky.

If you’re mad because you’re over-fat, feeling cruddy, out of shape, riddled with aches and pains, etc. etc. you should start by taking a good, hard, honest look at how you’ve treated that ever-patient container of yours.

  • What have you fed (or not fed) your body?
  • How do you rest your body? How long do you sleep every night, and how well? How do you still your mind and give it serenity?
  • What chemicals do you put into your body? What industrial-pharmaceutical products do you eat, spray, inhale, bathe in, or smear?
  • How do you move your body? Do you move it at all, or jam it into a chair or car for several hours?
  • Do you let your body out to play in its natural environment? Do you see sunlight or greenery, or breathe fresh air, or feel the change in temperature every day? How well do you match your schedule with the cycle of the sun?
  • Do you say nice things to your body? Do you high-five it when it comes through for you? Do you high-five it just for existing and being a marvellous triumph of engineering?
  • Do you subject your body to a constant cacophony of sensory overload and stress?
  • When was the last time you wrapped your arms around yourself and gave yourself a big smushy hug? When you patted your tummy and felt its softness happily, instead of hating it for not being a hardened washboard? (Seriously, when the fuck did “washboard abs” become a goal that otherwise reasonable and intelligent women pursued? Evolution is laughing in your face, ladies. Suggest revising goal to “squatter’s ass”.)

Why, in short, should your body perform for you? Have you earned that performance?

Really?

Whether you've chosen to have children or live child-free, how and when did you (or will you) reach this decision? If you're in a relationship, did you (or will you) decide separately or together?

I've known since I was in my teens that I didn't want children. when I wanted a tubal done (in my early 20's), the doctor had no problem doing it for me. in fact, I didn't even get through my list of reasons why I didn't want to spawn when he stopped me and said "ooookay! I can see you've really thought about this. let's do it."

my birthday is less than a month away - January 12th. as always, I demand much love and attention, and will be a sadmopey denise if I don't get it...

don't know what I'm doing to celebrate, if anything, because at the moment I'm not feeling overly enthused about anything. but maybe by the time January hits I'll be feeling more chipper, so I'm not going to say for sure that there will be no birthday-partying.

ummm, yes. that's all I've got. more in January, probably ^_^

copy-pasted from this entry at Shapely Prose.

this is, as the title of entry suggests, a post about rape - specifically, a post about how women assess the men they meet in terms of potential risk... if reading about rape/rapists is scary or potentially offensive to you, please feel free to skip over this entry.

I went back today and re-watched the bmi illustrated slideshow, and then went through the complete photoset on flickr...

amazing stuff.

it was good to be reminded that I need to be less concerned with a) the number on the scale and b) the way I look, and more concerned with my actual, y'know, fitness. which sucks right now, in case anyone was wondering. I can't climb a flight of stairs without feeling breathless, which is off-the-charts pathetic. yes, I would love to fit back into my smaller sizes, mostly because I have so damn many awesome clothes... but the most important thing is my health.

I'm going to focus on building muscle strength, because without it my back goes into rebellion and I basically turn into an always-in-pain whinypants; and cardiovascular stamina, because I would really like to be able to go hiking next summer, or even simply go for a walk with a friend without having to tell them to slow down so that I can actually hold a conversation :p

I will probably be looking for people to do active-type things with, so if you want to go swimming, dancing, snowshoeing (because, yeah, I might hate it, but I at least want to *try* it!), walking, or whatever - please let me know!

as per Ms.redlillia's suggestion, I've been playing around with making some of my images into black & white...

erhm. I'd just like to mention that getting good b/w images is not nearly as easy as one might think - just making an image monochrome doesn't usually produce very pretty results. I'm a bit of a perfectionist to begin with, so in general the process dissolves into madness (complete with hair-pulling and wailing, I assure you) and ultimately results in me having multiple variations of an image, and a ludicrous inability to make a decision as to which version is the best.

this is the original image

opinions? preferences?

full-size images can be seen here, if one wishes...

I <3 everything Amanda Palmer.

oh yes.

this song (which I've been listening to on repeat, because it's just that fucking awesome) is from one of the Dresden Dolls albums. everyone who doesn't already have everything Dresden/Amanda should go acquire it.

he's been trying with limited success
to get this girl to let him get into her pants
but every time he thinks he's getting close
she threatens death before he gets a chance

and that's the way it is in minnesota
and that's the way it is in oklahoma
that's the way it's been since protozoa
first climbed onto the shores of california

and she's been trying with limited success
to get him to turn out the lights and dance
cause like any girl all she really wants
that fickle little bitch romance
that fickle little bitch romance

and that is why a girl is called a tease
and that is why a guy is called a sleaze
and that's why god made escort agencies
one life to live and mace and GHB

and that's the way it is in minnesota
and that's the way it is in oklahoma
that's the way since the animals and noah
first climbed onto the shores of california

must not be too kind
stop thinking love is blind
clench your fists yeah write
“she's just not my type...”

why all these conflicting specifications
maybe to prevent overpopulation
all I know is that all around the nation
the girls are crying and the boys are masturbating

and that's the way it is in minnesota
and that's the way it is in oklahoma
that's the way aristophanes and homer
wrote the iliad and lysistrata

and that's the way it is in minnesota
and that's the way it is in oklahoma
that's the way it's been since protozoa
first climbed onto the shores of california

... also, I am ridiculously excited about the fact that Amanda is singing on one of the songs from the upcoming Apoptygma Berzerk album. does this make me a really big nerd, or is that just me being paranoid?

...teh flying car...

hmmm... I can see all sorts of complications with this design, mostly because of the way I usually envision flying cars zipping all over the sky at different levels and in different directions (especially when I'm stuck in traffic, of course! who wouldn't LOVE to be able to rise up into the air and just go zooming off above everyone else's heads?)... but I suppose this design would actually be safer and more practical.

foo. stupid future, not living up to my fantasies. what's WITH that? *sulks*

...the escalator at City Hall tried to eat my skirt this morning. I guess it doesn’t like this particular skirt - or perhaps it likes it a little too much?

first time evar escalator-skirt-munching! pretty impressive when you consider that I’ve regularly been wearing floor-sweeping skirts for over a decade.

hopefully it’ll be another decade before it happens again...
